Pratunam or Sukhumvit: where to get a suit made

Most tailors visitors meet are on Sukhumvit. Most of the cloth they use passes through Pratunam first. The districts differ in rent, frontage and who walks past — not in whether a jacket is built properly.

What each district actually is

Sukhumvit is the expat spine of the city. Tailoring there is showroom trade: street frontage, walk-in visibility, and rents that reflect both. It is where a visitor staying in a Sukhumvit hotel will naturally end up, and there are genuinely good shops along it.

Pratunam is the garment district. It is where the wholesale fabric market physically is — bolts arriving, being sold on, and being cut a few floors away. The frontage is worse and the buildings read as shopping centres rather than ateliers. The trade infrastructure is here.

That is the honest difference. It is a difference in business model, not in craft.

What the district does not tell you

It does not tell you how the jacket is built, and that is the variable that actually moves both price and lifespan.

A Sukhumvit showroom and a Pratunam unit can each sell you a fused jacket or a half-canvas one, and nothing about the shopfront distinguishes them. The layer that gives a jacket its shape is either stitched in over hours or glued on in minutes, and once the garment is finished you cannot see which. We wrote the full version separately: fused, half-canvas or full-canvas.

Judge either district by the same question. Which construction does this quote cover?

Where the money goes in each

Rent is real and it lands somewhere. A showroom on a prime Sukhumvit block carries an overhead that a unit inside Platinum Fashion Mall does not, and that shows up either in the price or in what is quietly saved elsewhere in the garment.

This cuts both ways and it is worth saying plainly: lower overhead is only an advantage if it goes into the cloth and the hours rather than into a lower headline number. A cheap suit from a cheap unit is still a cheap suit. What our own prices cover is set out in the price guide, and what moves the figure is explained in what a Bangkok suit should cost.

The touting question

Street approaches are a Sukhumvit and tourist-strip phenomenon far more than a Pratunam one, for a structural reason: Pratunam's foot traffic is largely trade and local shoppers who are not susceptible to it. That is not a claim that every Sukhumvit shop touts — most do not — but if you are stopped in the street anywhere in this city, the significant fact is that they chose you rather than you choosing them. More on that in how to choose a tailor in Bangkok.

Which should you actually go to?

If you are in Bangkok for three days and staying on Sukhumvit, the travel time may decide it, and that is a legitimate reason. If you live here, or you have a week, or you want to stand in front of the cloth before choosing it, Pratunam is where the cloth is.

We are at 419/A Oxford 5, 2nd Floor, Platinum Fashion Mall, Phetchaburi Road, Pratunam — BTS Chit Lom or Ratchathewi, or the Airport Rail Link to Ratchaprarop, open 10:00–20:00 daily. The full detail is on the Platinum Fashion Mall page.

Either way, ask the construction question before you compare a single price. It is the one thing that sorts shops in both districts, and it costs nothing to ask.

Frequently Asked

Is Pratunam or Sukhumvit better for tailoring?

Neither district is better as such — they serve different buyers. Sukhumvit is where most expat-facing tailors sit, with showroom frontage and prices that reflect the rent. Pratunam is the garment district: it is where the fabric wholesale trade actually is, and the overheads are lower. What matters far more than the postcode is what the shop will tell you about how your jacket is built.

Why is My Suit Bangkok in Platinum Fashion Mall?

Because Pratunam is the fabric trade, and being inside it shortens the distance between the cloth and the cutting table. My Suit Bangkok works from 419/A Oxford 5 on the 2nd floor of Platinum Fashion Mall, in Pratunam, Bangkok. The mall reads as a shopping centre to visitors, but for the garment trade in this city it is the centre of the wholesale cloth market, and that is the reason to be here.

Is a mall tailor lower quality than a Sukhumvit shop?

Location tells you almost nothing about construction, which is the thing that actually varies. A Sukhumvit showroom and a Pratunam unit can both sell a fused jacket or a half-canvas one, and the frontage will not tell you which. The reliable test is the same in either district: ask which construction your quote covers, ask to handle the cloth, and get the quote in writing before anything is cut.

How do I get to Pratunam?

BTS Chit Lom and BTS Ratchathewi are both walkable, and the Airport Rail Link stops at Ratchaprarop, a few minutes away. Platinum Fashion Mall is on Phetchaburi Road in Pratunam, Ratchathewi. The shop is open 10:00 to 20:00 daily. If you are coming from the Sukhumvit hotel strip it is a short ride, and it is worth the trip precisely because the fabric market is here rather than there.
